Four hours later, Duncan ignored the way Bethany glared at him from across the breakfast table and resigned himself to a long day. At least it would be a quiet one, seeing as how she hadn’t spoken a word to him in the forty-five minutes she’d been awake and moving about. “I’m leaving in five,” he said. “You can stay here in the safe room like yesterday or come with me. Your choice.”

Man, her eyes revealed all the things she kept bottled up. How long could she hold it inside before she exploded?

Bethany carried her dishes to the sink and left them there, disappeared into her bedroom but quickly returned fully dressed in leggings and a loose shirt and carrying the small bag she used for a purse. She moved to the door, waiting for him to join her, all without a single word.

Ah, now this was going to be fun. “No handcuffs today?”

Her mouth firmed.

“Too bad. I was looking forward to it.”

“Get off on it, do you?” she asked, giving him a look of complete innocence.

He grabbed his gear and paused once he stood in front of her. “On giving a woman pleasure? Yes, actually. It’s the only way to go,” he told her, smiling at his play on words.

“That wasn’t what I… Forget it.”

He leaned his shoulder against the wall as though they had all the time in the world. “Bethany, you were upset last night. Finding out about Charlie’s mother and Owen’s SUV frightened you. It’s normal to want physical closeness after news like that.”

“Ooh, you’re a shrink now?”

Duncan stared into her eyes and saw the impact of his words, knew he’d hit close to home. “Experience,” he said. “I’ve had more than a few of those nights myself, sweetheart. I didn’t want you to do something you’d regret.”

In other words, he didn’t want to be a regret.

He wasn’t sure why he needed to hear her deny that their attraction was entirely based on hormones, but he did. Maybe his ego needed stroking. Maybe he needed her to acknowledge he wasn’t the only one battling a chemistry between them that had nothing to do with hormones or lust, but… something else entirely. Something that had drawn him so far out of his comfort zone he wasn’t sure what he was feeling, only that it wasn’t his norm. “Admit it wasn’t all hormones, and we’ll drop the subject— for now.”

“Can’t. You’re looking for reassurance, but you’d know the answer if you’ve got me as figured out as you seem to think you do.”

He winced at the dig and acknowledged the blow to his ego with a nod. “Merely trying to get you to tell the truth— as well as admit to a certain interest when it comes to what turns you on.”

Bethany lifted her chin a notch higher and parted her lips, her tongue flicking out briefly to wet them. The move drew his gaze as he’d bet she intended.

“Fine. It’s true.”

His gut knotted, and his heart and lungs stopped functioning while he stood there gaping at her in surprise.
